Artist Detail
Larissa Dahroug
Visual Artist
About the artist: Larissa is a new and emerging metalsmith currently working out of her studio, STUDIO 19, in Sunnyvale, California. Her specialty is fabrication and surface manipulation of non-ferric metals. Though she was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Larissa grew up mostly in Rochester Hills, Michigan. She pursued metalsmithing at The Center for Creative Studies College of Art and Design, now known as The College for Creative Studies, in Detroit, Michigan. There she studied under Thomas Madden, and Susan Holt. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in crafts with a specialization in metalsmithing in May 2001.
Larissa has a strong sense of her own aesthetic, and most admires the work of contemporary metalsmiths Myra Mimlitsch-Gray, and Linda Darty. Her aesthetic has included: the deliberate use of heavy gauge metal sheet to emphasize graphic lines, the dissection and reconstruction of the graphic composition of every day objects into a new object with a new purpose, subtle manipulation of oxidation on surfaces to contrast the high shine luster of non-ferric metals such as sterling silver and copper, and precise fabrication techniques. Recently she has introduced the juxtaposition of finer gauge metal next to the exclusively heavy gauge metal of her earlier works. Also, she has expanded her pursuit of color to semiprecious stones and pearls. All of these properties are converging to evolve the aesthetic of Larissa’s wearable objects.
Larissa is a member of The Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG) and The Society of American Silversmiths (SAS). Her work has been featured in the House of Style Fashion Show 2003 in Berkeley, California and she has taught art for the San Jose Museum of Art in San Jose, California, and for the Creative Arts Center in Sunnyvale, California.
