    About the artist:

I explore the Pacific Mussel shell because I love its strong sienna, white and blue ridged exterior. Growth rings suggest spirals of galaxies. Sometimes a beautifully shaped shell is accented by barnacles like white stars in a night sky. The highest point is often worn to reveal a silvery moon or lacy foam. The lines circle out like waves on a topographical map. Inside its concave shape are delicate iridescent colors, polished and elegantly delineated by a baroque curve of purple. Open they form a heart shape. Each shell is a pair and each pair is unique. One half will not fit any other than its own mate. I have explored the mussel motif since I first found one in 1961. Its become a metaphor for myself. The shape is full of gentle curves. It represents protection. At home at the edge of the sea, in the frolicking waves, it's securely attached by bysal threads to a rock. Yet it can move, reattach. In Alaska, I saw a shell floating like a canoe on a calm sea. Was it lost or out for an adventure?
