Start Time(s): Opening reception Friday, January 13, from 7 to 9 pm Thereafter the galleries are open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 1 to 5 pm

Sanchez Art Center is proud to present the unique artwork of Bay Area artist Tom Holland This exhibition of Holland’s recent work opens Friday, January 13, with a reception from 7 to 9 pm, and will run through February 12 Holland’s work is both sculptural and painterly, with colorful, curving surfaces of thin, folded aluminum Known as one of California's most important contemporary artists, Holland considers the color surfaces and the interaction and motion in his work as the most important aspects of his paintings He also often works on paper, marble, and copper Holland will give an Artist’s Talk at 4 pm on Sunday, February 12, the closing day of the exhibition

Tom Holland lives and works in the Bay Area and has been painting for 50 years After having attended UC Berkeley, he went to Chile on a Fulbright Grant He then returned to Berkeley to begin teaching at the San Francisco Art Institute He has also been on the faculty at UCLA and UC Berkeley He received both an NEA Grant and a Guggenheim Fellowship He now works full-time in his studio in downtown Berkeley

After having painted in traditional oil on canvas, in the 1970s Holland began using materials that were light and strong but did not require a frame He uses fiberglass and aluminum, making pieces of color that hang on the wall like stiff tapestry The thin edges allow each painting to become a part of the space it occupies Using simple materials and a unique approach combining painting and sculpture, he cuts thin sheets of aluminum to build either a wall painting or a free-standing sculptural form He then rivets the cut pieces to sheets of aluminum or fiberglass He uses epoxy paint to achieve the effects of depth, light, reflection, and shadow

Holland is represented by art galleries in San Francisco, New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles His work is in the collections of all the major museums in the United States, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the Guggenheim Museum, the Whitney Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis His work is also represented in the Anderson Collection as well as the Charles Schwab Company, the Mayfield Fund, and the Di Rosa Collection of Contemporary California Art Holland has recently completed a large installation in the lobby of the Lake Merritt Plaza Building at 1999 Harrison Street in downtown Oakland

Two concurrent exhibitions will also open at Sanchez Art Center on January 13 The East Gallery hosts Memorandum to Light from Shadows, a group show by Skyline College art students featuring ceramics, sculpture, and photography, curated by Skyline professor Arthur Takayama The Skyline College Jazz Quintet will present live music and entertainment at the reception

The West Gallery will exhibit work by members of the Art Guild of Pacifica in a group show entitled Something Edgy Definitions of “edgy” range from nervously irritable, impatient and anxious, to sharp or biting, sharply defined or outlined, to daringly innovative, provocative, and trend-setting or on the cutting edge Lots of possibilities here, and as artist Gale Frances says, “Who knows what the cutting edge is? It all depends on how uptight you are when you start out” Should be interesting!

All three exhibits open Friday, January 13, with a reception for the artists from 7 to 9 pm Thereafter the galleries are open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 1 to 5 pm, through the exhibit’s close on February 12 Sanchez Art Center is located at 1220 Linda Mar Blvd, Pacifica, California, about 15 miles east of Highway 1 and the Pacific Ocean For more information about the center, call 650-355-1894 or visit wwwsanchezartcenterorg

The Main Gallery in Redwood City celebrates the new year with new work by their 23 artist members

Some of the work you'll see are circular ceramic vases by Doris Fischer-Colbrie They explore different surface treatments and use heavily textured glazes, and according to Fischer-Colbrie "are easy-to-use and have an earthy, raw feel that will enhance any living space"

Having recently found lost poetry written by her mother and grandfather, Belinda Chlouber has monoprints inspired by her grandfather Her work utilizes images evoked from the poetry and intertwines bits and pieces of text throughout the work

This is just a sampling of what to expect with many other new pieces by the gallery artists The Main Gallery, an artists' cooperative with some 23 members, showcases the work of some of the best local talent in the Bay Area The gallery is located at 1018 Main Street at the corner of Main and Middlefield in the historic yellow Victorian cottage next to Alana's Cafe

The Two Artists, Two Views exhibit features new or recent works by two award-winning artists of the Portola Art Gallery: Alice Weil and Mary K Stahl

Alice Weil uses oil paints to capture the golden foothills and oaks of the Bay Area in her paintings She uses beautiful saturated color and portrays the light on the landscape in such a way as to produce lively, yet harmonious, paintings Alice's paintings have been exhibited at the Triton Museum, at the prestigious Greenhouse Gallery of Fine Art in San Antonio, Texas, and at the Art Museum of Los Gatos

Mary K Stahl's rendition of quiet landscapes and still life subjects reflects her emotional response to her subjects Her paintings resonate with a unique sense of time and place that calm and beckon the viewer into the scene She paints with soft pastels or oil paints Mary's paintings have been exhibited at the Triton Museum, the Haggin Museum in Stockton, CA, and the Art Museum of Los Gatos She has also participated in many juried plein air painting competitions Recently, she was awarded the Fine Art Connoisseur "Emerging Artist" Award during the Carmel Art Festival She is a signature member of the Pastel Society of the West Coast

Mavericks is awe-inspiring and this exhibit is bringing all of that energy into the gallery The images inspire people, they reach people, and they will bring you right into the wave Tony Canadas, local photographer and Maverick’s surfer, says: "Shooting from the jet ski is all about timing You have to predict where each wave will break and you have to have knowledge of the reef underneath to know exactly where that sweet spot will be, so you can get that one magic shot"

Ed Grant, curator of the show, adds: "Mavericks is a wonder of the world It’s everything you’ve heard about and more The dangers, the rocks, the sharks, the gigantic sets with waves the size of buildings and the deafening sound of it will give you the visual ride of your life Mavericks surfers make it look easy, but they’re awesome athletes dealing with truly fearsome conditions"

The Caldwell Gallery at the San Mateo County Hall of Justice in Redwood City presents a small group show featuring oil paintings by Tom Chapman, Kit Colman, Vicki Coe Mitchell and watercolors by Alisan Andrews Much of the artwork depicts San Mateo County scenes, from Woodside Horse Park to Montara Beach

Tom Chapman, a former horse jockey, is now a full-time artist who highlights his love and knowledge of horses in much of his art Kit Colman, a landscape oil painter, grew up in the Silicon Bay Area and her artwork in inspired by the beauty of California A longtime Woodside resident and physician, Vicki Coe Mitchell, spends much time painting outdoors where she enjoys capturing sea and landscapes Alisan Andrews, a former oil painter, explored watercolors in 1995 and hasn't stopped since She is fascinated with colors and how they work together

In addition, the Hall of Justice Community Gallery (downstairs by the cafe) is proud to showcase tranquil abstract acrylic paintings on concrete boards by Pescadero resident, Lora Groves Groves explains her newest work: "I explore the archive of qualities available with a sturdier surface It is a nice play off the porosity of the fabric because concrete has it's own variable porosity, but stands a different kind of working process"

Finally, The Rotunda Gallery at 555 County Center is pleased to exhibit sculpture and hanging mobiles by Dave Putnam, Woodside resident Putnman's work concentrates on raising awareness of endangered animal species By twisting thousands of strands of stainless steel wire together, he weaves furry animal shapes, as well as using brass and aluminum in his kinetic mobiles

Signs of Life by Robert Buelteman

Have you ever wondered what a plant feels like when it’s illuminated during photosynthesis, drawing in the electricity of the sun? Light is a necessary nutrient for us, too, and many of us languish during the light-poor winter months, but here is an art exhibit to enliven and inspire even those most in the doldrums of seasonal affective disorder--Signs of Life, an exhibit of cameraless, lensless, computer-free photograms by Robert Buelteman, showing at Sanchez Art Center from February 24 through April 1 The opening reception will be held Friday, February 24, from 7 to 9 pm, and the artist will talk about his work on April 1 at 4 pm

Robert Buelteman was an accomplished black-and-white landscape photographer for 25 years before he had an epiphany in the Arizona desert that inspired him to change course He had foreseen his artistic life as a straight, predictable path ahead, and knew he needed a new direction The ghost of Buelteman future did not appeal to him, and he decided to create a closer and more direct involvement with his subject and his medium He chose to begin anew, setting aside film, cameras, and computers, and searching for a new way to directly image the life force Buelteman drew from the techniques of Kirlian photography (photographs of auras, the electrical emanations of living beings), and developed his own unique, back-to-basics relationship with his medium and the world of nature The resulting artworks are breathtaking, and worlds away from his earlier black and white landscape photographs

It’s not an easy process Buelteman began experimenting with taking pictures without film, and without computers, by laying his plant or flower directly on a large plate and running electrical current through the plant to produce an image that is all about light and color He wanted to work larger than most Kirlian equipment would allow, so he found an engineer to build a generator that could drive an image over 80 square inches Buelteman then constructed his own super-sized easel made of aluminum sheet metal floating in a solution of liquid silicone and sandwiched between pieces of 1/8-inch-thick Plexiglas Then he located 8-by-10-inch tungsten-balanced color transparency film, and the work began Buelteman sculpts his plant subjects into the desired thinness to display on the plate, and uses high-voltage electrical pulses to capture the images He also adds light sources, literally painting with light using a fiber-optic probe the size of a human hair, to enhance the light and color he chooses to emphasize

For over a decade, Buelteman has been attempting to perfect his process, working as a guest at the Santa Fe Institute in New Mexico and under the auspices of the Djerassi Resident Artists Program in northern California His work can be found in the permanent collections of the Yale University Art Museum, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Stanford University, and numerous corporate collections He has now shown these stunningly beautiful, light-filled images in more than 35 countries, and has published four portfolios of this colorful work, one of which bears the name of this exhibit at Sanchez Art Center, Signs of Life This catalog will be available for sale at the Sanchez galleries We are delighted to host this new exhibition of his inspiring work

Showing concurrently with Signs of Life are an Art Guild of Pacifica exhibit titled Heads in the West Gallery, and Different Colors 4 in the East Gallery, featuring artwork from The Arc San Francisco ArtReach Studios

All three exhibits open Friday, February 24, with a reception for the artists from 7 to 9 pm, and will be on display through Sunday, April 1 Gallery hours (after the reception) are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, 1–5 pm Sanchez Art Center is located at 1220 Linda Mar Blvd, Pacifica, California, about 15 miles east of Highway 1 and the Pacific Ocean For more information about the center, call 650-355-1894 or visit wwwsanchezartcenterorg
