Portola Art Gallery presents A Colorful Journey, an exhibit of new acrylic paintings by Doriane Heyman of Hillsborough. Since in art, as in life, one does not escape one’s background, an artist’s experiences get reflected in the artwork. Having grown up in the Netherlands and having lived and traveled extensively in many European countries, Heyman still finds Europe a source of inspiration for many of her paintings. Often she finds an unusual angle, a different way of looking at the world.

Besides landscapes of different countries and compositions with people in various settings, water scenes are a favorite subject matter of hers. “I am attracted by the mystery of water, sometimes revealing a lot, sometimes opaque, not giving anything away, and always evoking a myriad of different moods.”

In most paintings she explores the effect of light on the forms and the moods it creates. The hallmarks of her paintings are good design, strong darks and lights and vivid colors. Known mostly for her watercolors, in the Portola Art Gallery she will show her latest acrylics during the month of October.
