Portola Art Gallery presents Impressions of the Land and Sea, an exhibit of new oil paintings by Tomiko Bailey of Moss Beach. The impression of nature is the theme, as Mother Nature never reveals the exact same scene twice. It is the artist’s job to place paint on canvas to preserve the moment and capture the feeling with fresh excitement. Tomiko Bailey does just that with her new exhibit this September. She is uninhibited by the perceived edges of the canvas, expecting the viewer to feel the sensation of open space beyond the implied framework.

“My intention is to paint a scene so open and unlimited by the frame that the viewer feels free to enter. It’s exciting capturing fresh impressions and depicting as much as possible in a few hours on location. California offers numerous beautiful places to paint with intense light from the sky accentuating the earth tones. Plein air painting allows me to work with concentration and spontaneity. I also paint at my studio in Moss Beach to compose larger paintings which are mostly expansions of the smaller field studies.”
