Portola Art Gallery presents Urban Still Lifes: Faded Glories, Forgotten Stories, an exhibit of weather worn objects by Nancy Wagstaff of Atherton. Attracted to the “cast off” aspect of urban life, Wagstaff paints items that have been left behind by society, quietly disintegrating in their stillness.

Wagstaff’s painting, Empty Nest (Oil on Canvas, 15” x 26”) is about an abandoned house that speaks of a previous life. Nancy says, “The house was once the container, at least for a while, of all the joys and sorrows that make up a human life. One is brought face to face with the mystery of who once lived there and why did they leave. What were they like, and what happened within those walls?

This house was in the farming countryside of southern Oregon. It had beautiful dark thunderheads behind it and a raw winter sun shinning on the front of it. The surrounding trees made shadows on the faded, chipped, robins-egg blue of the house. The front door was ajar, and branches littered the tall grass that encompassed the house. There was a feeling of a “nest”, once used but now abandoned.”
