This exhibition  presents a wide geographic and aesthetic range of popular Indian textile traditions. Folk textiles, defined in the narrowest sense as those made and/or decorated by village or tribal women for their own use, are featured along with professionally produced cloths made for popular consumption and temple textiles that express popular beliefs. Fine textiles using an astonishing variety of techniques have for thousands of years served as items of tactile and visual delight for the purposes of personal adornment, household furnishing, animal coverings, articles of dowry and to fulfill ritual and ceremonial functions.

These objects are embroidered, appliquéd, decorated with beadwork and embellished with mirrors, sequins, buttons and shells. Each caste passes from generation to generation its own distinct designs, colors and range of stitches, which, together with the cut of their garments and their particular tie-and-dye and block-printed designs, form the major visual part of a caste’s cultural identity.

The exhibition includes quilts, shawls and tribal clothing, hangings, dowry and household items from the 19th and 20th century. Carol Summers’ collection is an homage to the talent and spirit of the women who have lavished such care and dedication on their work. Carol Summers is a printmaker of woodcuts and is represented widely in museums and private collections in the United States and abroad. Since 1993, he has led tours of India, mainly Rajasthan, focusing on folk art and the palaces of the Rajputs.
