The Courthouse Docket series continues with local hero Captain Leslie "Les" Williams, an original Tuskegee Airman.

Tuskegee Airmen is the term used to describe the black fighter pilots of the 99th Pursuit Squadron, later incorporated into the 332nd Fighter Group, who fought during World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corps. They were trained at Tuskegee Army Air Field in Tuskegee, Alabama. At twenty-two years old, Mr. Williams was drafted into the Army and enrolled in the Tuskegee Institute. There, he became part of an elite group of black men whose mission was to prove that they could excel as combat pilots. The group flew more than 15,500 sorties and almost 1,600 missions. Its members earned 150 Distinguished Flying Crosses, Legions of Merit, eight Purple Hearts, and the Red Star of Yugoslavia.

Les Williams was born in San Francisco and later moved to San Mateo, where he attended San Mateo High School and San Mateo Junior College. Tap dancing had been his love ever since he was 15. He made a deal with a San Francisco dance teacher that he would clean his studio if the teacher would teach him how to dance. After World War II, Mr. Williams returned home to San Mateo and started a very successful dance studio, which was in operation for 25 years. At the age of 55 he returned to school, graduating from Stanford University with an undergraduate degree in history and a graduate degree in law. In the spring of 2007 he received the Congressional Gold Medal. Les lives in Belmont with his wife of over 60 years.
