Archaeologist Mark Hylkema discusses the archaeology and and ethnography of the ancestral Ohlone people.

In 1769, when the first Spanish expedition discovered the San Francisco Bay, they encountered numerous local tribes that lived in a bountiful landscape. Archaeological research has found that local tribes that spread along the San Mateo and Santa Cruz County coast developed an early focus on marine resources. Neighboring people of the Santa Clara Valley and San Francisco Bay shore developed a different economic focus creating an exchange system that eventually promoted more complex levels of social organization.

Hylkema is the Santa Cruz District Archaeologist for the California State Park. He is also an adjunct professor of Anthropology at Foothill College.
