Bay Area artist Tamar Assaf was born and raised in Israel, the land of the Bible, where verses from the Hebrew Bible are part of the spoken language and Bible studies are part of school curriculum. With a great passion for painting animals it was only natural for Assaf to draw upon her cultural heritage and create the Animals of the Bible painting series - an exploration of the intricacies and complexities associated with the unique andsignificantrole animals play in the Old Testament, the base of the three large monotheistic religions thatinfluenced and helped shape human culture and civilization as we know them.

In late 2008, Assaf traveled to Israel to research and photograph animals mentioned in the Hebrew Bible. Her exploration touches on historic and linguistic aspects of translation influences relating to howanimal references changed and evolved, over time and across cultures.

Assaf portrays the animals from a unique close-up, cropped composition, focusing on the animal, minimizing background and setting. "I look for the unique characteristics of the animal. I try to extract the essence that distinguishes it." Assaf uses palette knives to apply impasto, thick oil paint, onto wood panels or canvas. "My paintings are my interpretation of those distilled qualities of the animals."

Assaf believes in the strong statement of multiples, and paints her animals in polyptych.
