    Flora and Fauna - Watercolors by Barbara von Haunalter, featuring paintings of trees, flowers, animals and birds in the landscape.     Flora and Fauna - Watercolors by Barbara von Haunalter, featuring paintings of trees, flowers, animals and birds in the landscape. The exhibit will include jungle scenes from her recent travels to southern Costa Rica, interspersed with her depictions of local scenes. Barbara, a resident of Los Altos Hills, paints impressionist plein air landscapes in watercolor and oil. She enjoys painting on location wherever she is, always carrying her watercolors and camera with her. Her studio paintings are based on observation and memory, as well as sketches and photographs.

    Primarily a self-taught artist, Barbara drew and painted the animals and plants on the Connecticut farm where she grew up. After earning a BA in English from Tufts University, she turned to painting in her back yard in Philadelphia while the oldest of her five children napped. Her first formal art instruction was at the Philadelphia Museum School of Art, where she studied printmaking.

    Moving to California, she was struck by the beauty of the countryside and the coast. She took watercolor classes and printmaking at the Pacific Art League and through a Palo Alto Adult Education class which became what is now the Peninsula Outdoor Painters. She also studied painting, drawing and computer graphics at Foothill College.

    Barbara is a member of the Santa Clara Valley Watercolor Society. In addition to Portola Art Gallery, Barbara also exhibits with Viewpoints Gallery in Los Altos.
