Between the years 1973-1990, massive emigration of the Ethiopian Jewish population took place in several waves, and today the majority of the Ethiopian Jews are living in Israel. There have been some efforts to employ Ethiopians based on skills they already possess: in the production of traditional craft. In 1993, fashion designer Miki Shapiro, with the help of the Jewish Agency and the Industry and Trade Ministry of Welfare, developed the Almaz Factory, a workplace to employ the women in the Ethiopian community living in Lod.

Due to lack of funding, however, the factory is in danger of shutting down. The threat of unemployment presents a setback for the women working in the Almaz factory, however the preservation of traditional culture is at stake as well.

All the pieces produced at the Almaz factory are based on traditional Ethiopian styles. Each color is symbolic, bringing rich meaning to every design. For example, red signifies warmth, yellow signifies hope, and green signifies happiness.
