This photograph of Audrey Daniel's great-grandmother appeared in the New York Times in 1991. The caption read: "Jewish Woman in Traditional Clothing of Salonika." The article was about a traveling exhibition opening at the new Jewish Museum of New York entitled, In the Court of the Sultan: Sephardi Jews of the Ottoman Empire. Audrey's Great Grandmother’s image fascinated her. She felt a call from her ancestors to delve into her Sephardi heritage, a culture and tradition of which she had very little knowledge.

Through a friend Audrey connected with Rachel Bortnick, a specialist in Sephardi culture. Rachel agreed to be her guide and interpreter. Rachel’s connections to the Jewish community opened doors to virtually every Sephardi community in western Turkey.

This exhibition documents a personal and professional side of contemporary Sephardi women. Audrey and Rachel met with students, grandmothers, writers, poets and musicians.
