Featuring a centuries-old Chinese dictionary, printed from hand-carved wood blocks; “plique-a-jour” vases, designs in delicate see-through enamel, long out of production; “Shanghai Girls” advertising posters from the ‘30s, a reproduction folding armchair (Ming Dynasty); unique hand-carved soapstone sculpture; and – acknowledging Chinese New Year (February 3) - an original painting of “Good Fortune” in calligraphy, and a bronze medallion of a Rabbit.

Over the years, Dominic Tang has accumulated many antiques and collectibles. Some he has parted with (through his Man-U Imports in San Mateo), many remain in his personal collection. A few (the dictionary, the soapstone sculptures, and the “Good Fortune” painting) are originals. The armchair, plique-a-jour vases, and Shanghai Girls posters are reproductions, but even the reproductions are no longer produced. The reproductions have become collectible rarities in their own right. The originals reside in the Shanghai Museum. Why the scarcity? Mr. Tang reports that young people are no longer willing to undertake the lengthy training necessary to create these artifacts. The jobs and the money are to be found in factories that produce consumer goods (think electronics and clothes). Now the dealers come to California (and probably elsewhere) several times a year to buy Chinese antiques and artifacts – for the Mainland China market.
