Celebrate both Carnival and Mardi Gras at the Masque of the Red Death Carnivale Ball - PEERS' tribute to the genius of Edgar Allan Poe. The exquisite guest band for the evening is the Baguette Quartette, justly famous for their beautifully evocative arrangements of authentic dance music from 19th and early 20th century Paris, where Edgar Allan Poe's poetry was most admired and revered. The Quartette will play hauntingly beautiful waltzes, tangos, and javas (mazurka-like waltzes); lively polkas, schottisches, and vintage sambas; and a couple of elegant and intriguing set dances, including Les Lanciers and La Bastringue. The Baguette Quartette's very French version of the Congress of Vienna is to die for.

For those wanting an introduction to 19th century ballroom dance, there will be a pre-ball dance class at 7pm. Suggested attire is period costume, fantasy Mardi Gras or Carnival costume, or a fanciful version of period costume (Renaissance, 17th, 18th and 19th century costume is especially fashionable for Carnival but any earlier historical period costume works well, too). Modern evening dress is perfectly acceptable, however, and there is no dress code for the ball. To protect your reputation, masks are strongly recommended.

To get guests into the mood for the ball, a link to Poe's masterpiece The Masque of the Red Death is included.

There will be a no-host (cash) bar, and a light snack buffet. Potluck contributions to the buffet will be greatly appreciated. Our host, Prince Prospero, likes to entertain in a lavish style and that can be costly.
